What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple Love
It cannot shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith
It cannot destroy Peace
It cannot kill Friendships
It cannot suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage
|It cannot invade the Soul
It cannot steal eternal life
It cannot conquer the Spirit

In Maine, nearly 1000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed each year, mostly in women but some in men. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer sometime during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 33. The good news is that breast cancer death rates are going down likely due to an increase in early detection and improvements in treatment.

To address this all too common cancer, in 2001 the Women’s Cancer Fund was established. It ensures that each year Maine Cancer Foundation will have grant funds available for research, education and patient support programs for breast and other cancers that affect women. The Luncheon has raised over $1,000,000 since its inception.

The Women's Cancer Fund is fueled by money raised at the annual Cure Breast Cancer for ME Luncheon. Not only does the event raise money, but it salutes the common struggle faced by so many when the words, "you have breast cancer," are heard. The messages of courage and hope are delivered with moving video portraits. As significant, is the Cure Breast Cancer for ME Awards. These awards celebrate the individuals and organizations who strive each day to make a difference. Awards are presented in 5 categories: Outreach and Education, Medical Care and Research, Grassroots Advocacy, Lifetime Inspiration, and Meredith Strang Burgess Spirit of Life Award. In 2002, Meredith founded this event with great passion after her own fight with breast cancer.

"Going to the Luncheon was amazing," one attendee wrote. "I was so encouraged and moved by everyone’s story especially now that I'm nearly through my treatment. It hasn’t been easy but being with so many others who have been just where I am sharing their stories and giving back, it was tremendous...thank you!" The Luncheon is held early in October in Portland...please join us!

Recommended Early Detection strategies:

  • Have your doctor show you how to do a self breast exam and do one each month. If you notice any changes or an unusual lump, have your physician examine it. Do not delay.
  • If you or over 40, have a mammogram each year. If you are uninsured or underinsured, services may be available from the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, call toll free 1-800-350-5180
